What Should I Do With My Wedding Ring After Divorce?

Everyone faces this dreaded question: what should I do with my wedding ring once I finalise my divorce? It is a serious point to consider. Once a symbol of happiness, the ring has now become something other than that.

While there is no correct answer on what one should do, here are a variety of things you can consider.

Give The Ring Back

An easy solution may be to give the ring back to your ex. This will immediately cut ties and prevent any disputes over who had paid for it in the first place. Of course, this is a lot easier when money is not of particular concern or if you were not the person who bought it.

Your decision may be swayed by a prenuptial agreement which requires you to return the ring in the event of a divorce or simply because it was a family heirloom that belonged to your ex. In my case, I gave the ring back and moved on with my life.

Give It To The Next Generation

Another alternative is to pass the ring down to your children. This can turn a negative experience into something positive, as the next person to wear it may create many happy memories. Not only that, but from a financial point of view, it is one less headache to consider. This is most likely suitable when the ring in question is quite expensive.

Sell The Ring

This is the option that most people tend to consider. By selling the wedding ring, not only are you distancing yourself from anything connected to it, you may get yourself a nice sum in the process.

And by doing so, the buyer has the opportunity to benefit from something that has now caused you pain. This is quick and easy with the variety of online websites and jewelry stores.

Donate

There is also the option of donating the ring to a reputable charity. Charities, such as domestic violence ones, may accept jewelry donations. Then it is up to the charity to decide what they should do with the ring, which may include selling it to raise funds. Irrespective of what the case may be, that ring could change someone else's life for the better.

Dispose Of It

Throwing the ring away is the last course of action. Some people may do so in an impulsive act which is understandable. You no longer want to be reminded of it. People throw away many other things, so why should a ring be an exception?

If you do decide to dispose of it, try doing it in a novel way. Perhaps put it in a lake, or attach it to a balloon and let it go. The possibilities are endless.

So if you are ever in this situation, take the time to consider what is best for you.
